Below is the English version of the content.
Hello, everyone! This is Tina.
Have you ever heard of the term "Omakase (ใไปปใ)"?
It’s a Japanese word that means “a chef’s recommended course meal.” So, what exactly is "Imo-kase"?
Let’s explore why Imo-kase has become so popular, where you can try it, and what other "○○-kase" variations exist!
Recently, "Imo-kase" has become a trending term among young people in their 20s and 30s on social media.
The word "Imo-kase" is a combination of "Imo" (a friendly way to address an older woman who runs a restaurant in Korea) and "Omakase" from Japanese.
While "Omakase" refers to a chef’s selection of dishes, "Imo-kase" means “a generous meal personally chosen by an 'Imo' (a restaurant auntie).”
Usually, Imo-kase can be found at traditional restaurants, especially long-established eateries known as "Nopo" (๋ ธํฌ, old restaurants).
In fact, Imo-kase is not a completely new concept. In Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do (a city in Korea), there has long been a tradition where customers receive seasonal seafood dishes when they order alcohol. This dining culture was mainly enjoyed by middle-aged and older generations, but recently, younger people have also started showing interest.
The term "Imo-kase" became even more widespread after appearing on the popular Netflix show “Black and White Chef” (ํ๋ฐฑ์๋ฆฌ์ฌ).
Why is Imo-kase so popular?
1. Best Value for Money! Traditional Omakase courses are often expensive and come with small portions. However, Imo-kase offers generous portions at an affordable price. Since people can enjoy delicious food without breaking the bank, it has gained popularity among the MZ generation!
2. A Warm and Friendly Atmosphere Imo-kase is not just about delicious food. The restaurant owners (Imos) personally take care of their customers, creating a friendly and warm environment. It’s like visiting your grandmother’s house, where you’re treated to a hearty meal filled with love. In Korea, this warmth and hospitality are called "Jeong (์ )," which refers to deep emotional connections and care between people.
3. The Influence of the "Newtro" Trend Lately, Korea has been embracing the “Newtro” (New + Retro) trend, where people enjoy a modern take on retro culture. Young people love visiting old restaurants (Nopo) to experience vintage vibes and share their experiences on social media. Imo-kase perfectly combines the Newtro aesthetic, hearty traditional food, and a warm, nostalgic atmosphere, making it a key part of this trend.
4. A Unique Experience Perfect for Social Media! Unlike regular restaurant menus, Imo-kase meals are often spontaneous and chef-curated, creating a one-of-a-kind dining experience. This element of surprise and uniqueness makes it perfect for social media, satisfying the MZ generation’s desire for share-worthy experiences.
Here’s something fun! As Imo-kase gained popularity, similar concepts emerged, tailored to different types of restaurant owners.
✔ Mom-kase (์๋ง์นด์ธ) – A home-style Korean restaurant that serves warm, homemade meals like a mother’s cooking.
✔ Uncle-kase (์ผ์ด์นด์ธ) – A casual eatery run by a friendly uncle-like owner.
✔ Aje-kase (์์ฌ์นด์ธ) – A hearty, traditional restaurant with an old-school “Aje (์์ฌ, middle-aged man)” charm.
✔ Halmae-kase (ํ ๋งค์นด์ธ) – A comforting restaurant where a grandmother personally prepares the food.
These various "○○-kase" styles are spreading, each offering its own unique vibe and dining experience!
Imo-kase is not just a passing trend—it has become a new part of Korean dining culture. It combines affordability, generous portions, and heartfelt hospitality in a way that makes it a must-try experience!
Would you like to try Imo-kase for yourself? If you could create your own "○○-kase", what style would you choose? Share your thoughts in the comments!
