이 수업은 한글을 처음 배우는 왕초보(absolute beginners)를 위한 Super Beginner Korean Class의 첫 번째 수업이에요.

This class is the first lesson of the Super Beginner Korean Class, designed for absolute beginners who are learning Hangul for the very first time.

한국어를 전혀 몰라도 괜찮아요.

이 수업에서는 한글이 어떻게 생겼는지, 어떻게 읽는지, 왜 이렇게 만들어졌는지 아주 천천히, 처음부터 함께 배워요.

It’s okay if you don’t know any Korean at all.

In this lesson, we will learn together—slowly and step by step— what Hangul looks like, how to read it, and why it was created this way from the very beginning.

이 수업은 이런 분들을 위해 만들었어요. This class is made for:

• 한국어를 처음 시작하는 분 (Learners who are just starting Korean)

• 한글을 읽지 못하는 분 (Learners who cannot read Hangul yet)

• K-pop이나 K-드라마는 좋아하지만 글자는 아직 어려운 분 (Fans of K-pop or K-dramas who find the Korean alphabet still difficult)

1. 세종대왕은 왜 한글을 만들었을까요?| Why Did King Sejong Create Hangul?

한글은 세종대왕이 만들었어요. 세종대왕은 조선의 네 번째 왕이에요.

Hangul was created by King Sejong. He was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty.

📜 옛날에는 어떤 글자를 썼을까요? | What kind of writing system did people use in the past?

옛날 조선 시대 사람들은 한자(중국 글자)를 썼어요.

하지만 한자는 너무 어려웠어요.

그래서 보통 사람들은 글을 읽거나 쓰기 힘들었어요.

In the Joseon Dynasty, people used Hanja (Chinese characters).

However, Hanja was very difficult.

So ordinary people found it hard to read or write.

😢 글을 몰라서 생긴 문제 | Problems caused by not being able to read or write

사람들이 글을 몰라서 억울한 일을 당하는 경우도 많았어요.

이 모습을 보고 세종대왕은 마음이 아팠어요.

그래서 생각했어요.

“모두가 쉽게 읽고 쓸 수 있는 글자가 필요해.”

Because people could not read, many of them suffered unfair situations.

Seeing this, King Sejong felt very sad.

So he thought:“We need letters that everyone can read and write easily.”

✨ 한글의 탄생 | The Birth of Hangul

세종대왕은 1443년에 한글을 만들었어요. 그리고 1446년에 세상에 알렸어요.

또 한글을 설명한 책도 만들었어요. 이 책의 이름은 훈민정음이에요.

King Sejong created Hangul in 1443. In 1446, he introduced Hangul to the people.

He also made a book to explain Hangul. The name of the book is Hunminjeongeum.

📘 훈민정음의 뜻 | The Meaning of Hunminjeongeum

훈민정음은 이런 뜻이에요.

“백성을 가르치는 바른 소리”

즉, 모든 사람들이 쉽게 배우고 쓰는 글자라는 뜻이에요.

Hunminjeongeum means: “The correct sounds to teach the people.”

In other words, Hangul was created so that everyone could learn and use it easily.

2. 한글은 왜 특별할까요? | Why Is Hangul So Special?

한글은 아주 똑똑한 글자예요!

Hangul is a very smart writing system.

✔ 글자 모양이 소리와 연결돼요. The shapes of the letters are connected to sounds.

입 모양과 혀의 움직임을 보고 글자를 만들었어요.

The letters were designed based on the shape of the mouth and tongue.

✔ 글자를 조합해서 많은 말을 만들 수 있어요. You can combine letters to make many words.

자음과 모음을 블록처럼 조합해서 새로운 소리를 만들 수 있어요.

Consonants and vowels are combined like blocks to create new sounds.

✔ 배우기 쉬워요! Hangul is easy to learn.

한글은 쉬워서 처음 배우는 사람도 금방 읽을 수 있어요.

It has clear rules, so beginners can start reading quickly.

🌍 유네스코도 한글을 높이 평가했어요. UNESCO also highly values Hangul.

그래서 유네스코는 한글을 세상에서 가장 뛰어난 문자 중 하나라고 했어요.

It has said that Hangul is one of the best writing systems in the world.

✨ 한글은 단순한 글자가 아니에요. Hangul is not just a simple alphabet.

한글은 세계에서 가장 과학적인 문자예요!

It is considered one of the most scientific writing systems in the world.

3. 한글은 어떻게 만들었을까요? | How Was Hangul Created?

한글은 아무렇게나 만든 글자가 아니에요.

자연과 사람의 발음 기관을 보고 아주 체계적으로 만들었어요.

Hangul was not created randomly.

It was designed in a very systematic way, based on nature and how people make sounds.

🌿 한글의 모음은 자연에서 왔어요 | Korean Vowels Are Based on Nature

한글의 모음은 자연에서 아이디어를 얻었어요.

Korean vowels were inspired by nature.

기본 모음은 세 가지예요. There are three basic vowel shapes:

🌿 Basic Shapes of Hangul Vowels (3 Elements)

Shape	Korean Meaning	English Meaning
•	하늘 (동그라미)	Sky (a circle)
ㅡ	땅 (가로줄)	Earth (a horizontal line)
ㅣ	사람 (세로줄)	Human (a vertical line)

💡 Tip: These three shapes are the foundation of Hangul vowels.

이 세 가지 모양을 서로 합치면 새로운 모음이 만들어져요. By combining these shapes, new vowels are created.

☀️ How Basic Vowels Are Formed (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ)

ㅏ	사람과 하늘이 만났어요. 해가 동쪽에서 떠요.	A person meets the sky. The sun rises in the east.
ㅓ	하늘과 사람이 만났어요. 해가 서쪽에서 져요.	The sky meets a person. The sun sets in the west.
ㅗ	땅 위에 하늘이 있어요. 해가 위에 있어요.	The sky is above the earth. The sun is above.
ㅜ	하늘 아래에 땅이 있어요. 해가 아래에 있어요.	The earth is below the sky. The sun is below.

✔ 사람과 하늘이 만났어요. 해가 동쪽에서 떠요. (A person meets the sky. The sun rises in the east.) → ㅏ

하늘 모양(•)을 하나 더 붙이면 새로운 모음이 돼요.
If you add one more “sky” dot (•), you get new vowels.

ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ + • (sky) = ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ

👄 한글의 자음은 발음 기관을 보고 만들었어요 | Korean Consonants Are Based on Speech Organs

이번에는 자음을 볼게요.

한글의 자음은 목, 혀, 입술 모양을 보고 만들었어요.

Korean consonants were designed based on the shape of the mouth, tongue, and throat.

👄 자음의 모양과 소리 (기본 5개) | 5 Basic Consonants

ㄱ ✔ “ㄱ”은 혀가 목구멍을 막는 모양이에요. → [g] 소리가 나요. “ㄱ” is shaped like the tongue blocking the throat. It sounds like [g].

ㄴ ✔ “ㄴ”은 혀가 윗잇몸에 닿는 모양이에요. → [n] 소리가 나요. “ㄴ” shows the tongue touching the upper gums. It sounds like [n].

ㅁ ✔ “ㅁ”은 입술 모양이에요. → [m] 소리가 나요. “ㅁ” shows closed lips. It sounds like [m].

ㅅ ✔ “ㅅ”은 이가 살짝 보이는 모양이에요. → [s] 소리가 나요. “ㅅ” looks like slightly visible teeth. It sounds like [s].

ㅇ ✔ “ㅇ”은 목구멍의 모양으로 만들었어요. → [ng] 소리가 나요. “ㅇ” shows the shape of the throat. It sounds like [ng].

➕ 선(획)을 더하면 소리가 더 세져요! | Add a Stroke = Stronger Sound

기본 자음에 선을 하나 더하면 소리가 더 세져요.

If you add a stroke, the sound becomes stronger.

1) ㄱ → ㅋ

✔ “ㄱ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅋ”이 돼요. → 더 센 [k] 소리!

“ㄱ” + a stroke = “ㅋ” → A stronger [k] sound!

2) ㄴ → ㄷ → ㅌ

✔ “ㄴ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㄷ”이 돼요. → [n]에서 [d]로
✔ “ㄷ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅌ”이 돼요. → [d]에서 [t]로

"ㄴ" + a stroke = “ㄷ” → From [n] to [d] “ㄷ” + a stroke = “ㅌ” → From [d] to [t]

3) ㅁ → ㅂ → ㅍ

✔ “ㅁ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅂ”이 돼요. → [m]에서 [b]로
✔ “ㅂ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅍ”이 돼요. → [p] 소리!

“ㅁ” + a stroke = “ㅂ” → From [m] to [b], “ㅂ” + another stroke = “ㅍ” → [p] sound!

4) ㅅ → ㅈ → ㅊ

✔ “ㅅ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅈ”이 돼요. → [j] 소리
✔ “ㅈ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅊ”이 돼요. → [ch] 소리

“ㅅ” + a stroke = “ㅈ” → [j] sound, “ㅈ” + another stroke = “ㅊ” → [ch] sound

5) ㅇ → ㅎ

✔ “ㅇ”에 선(획)을 하나 더하면 “ㅎ”이 돼요. → [h] 소리

“ㅇ” + a stroke = “ㅎ” → [h] sound

🔥 쌍자음도 있어요 Double Consonants

어떤 자음은 두 번 쓰면 소리가 더 강해져요.

Some consonants become stronger when doubled.

✔ ㄱ → ㄲ [kk]

✔ ㄷ → ㄸ [tt]

✔ ㅂ → ㅃ [pp]

✔ ㅅ → ㅆ [ss]

✔ ㅈ → ㅉ [jj]
