Let’s start today’s post with one of Korea’s most beloved street foods: tteokbokki.

🍴 한국 사람들이 사랑하는 소울푸드, 떡볶이! |  Tteokbokki — Korea’s Soul Food

한국 사람들에게 떡볶이는 단순한 간식이 아니에요. 길거리 분식집 앞에만 가도 김이 모락모락 나는 매콤달콤한 냄새가 퍼지며 식욕을 자극하죠!

한입 먹는 순간— 고추장 양념의 알싸함과 달달함이 입안을 가득 채우고, 예전 친구들과 먹었던 추억이 떠올라요. 그래서 사람들은 떡볶이를 “마음의 음식”, 즉 소울푸드라고 부르곤 해요.

To Koreans, tteokbokki is much more than just a spicy snack. Stand near any street food stall, and you’ll immediately smell the spicy-sweet steam rising from the tteokbokki. It’s impossible to resist! 😋

As soon as you take a bite —that gochujang (red pepper paste) sauce fills your mouth with a spicy kick and subtle sweetness, and suddenly, you’re reminded of memories with friends after school. That’s why many Koreans call it their "soul food."

🍲 소울푸드 [쏘울푸드] | Soul food "소울푸드"란, 먹으면 마음까지 따뜻해지는 ‘위로의 음식’을 말해요. 영어권에서도 "comfort food"라는 표현으로 자주 사용돼요. "Soul food" refers to food that warms your heart — it brings comfort and emotional relief. In English, it's often called comfort food. 📌 예시 (Examples) 스트레스 받을 때 생각나는 내 소울푸드는 매운 닭발이야. My soul food when I’m stressed is spicy chicken feet. 엄마가 만들어준 된장찌개는 내 소울푸드야. The soybean paste stew my mom makes is my soul food.

😲 그런데… 떡볶이를 입는다고요?! | Wait… You wear tteokbokki?!

처음 들으면 놀랄 만한 말이지만, 한국에는 정말떡볶이 코트라는 별명이 있는 겨울 옷이 있어요. 이 코트의 원래 이름은 더플 코트 예요. 그런데 앞에 달린 나무 단추 모양이 마치 떡볶이 떡처럼 생겼기 때문에, 한국에서는 자연스럽게 “떡볶이 코트”라는 별명이 붙었죠.

It may sound strange at first, but in Korea, there’s a winter coat affectionately nicknamed the “Tteokbokki Coat.” This coat’s official name is the duffle coat, but the wooden toggles on the front look just like the rice cakes in tteokbokki — long and round! That’s how it got its cute nickname.

🧥 더플 코트 (Duffle Coat)

더플 코트는 두꺼운 울 소재에 후드와 독특한 토글 단추가 특징인 코트입니다. 한국에서는 이 토글 단추의 모양이 꼬치에 꽂은 떡볶이와 닮았다고 하여 '떡볶이 코트'라는 애칭으로 불립니다. 원래는 추운 북유럽 선원들의 방한복에서 유래되었으나, 1990년대 한국 학생들 사이에서 교복 위에 입는 필수적인 패션 아이템으로 큰 인기를 끌었습니다.

The duffle coat is characterized by its thick wool fabric, hood, and distinctive toggle fastenings. In Korea, these toggles resemble tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) on a skewer, earning it the affectionate nickname 'Tteokbokki Coat.' Although originally worn by Northern European sailors as cold-weather gear, it became a hugely popular, must-have fashion item for Korean students over their uniforms in the 1990s.

최근에는 이 코트가 따뜻하고 귀여운 레트로 감성으로 다시 유행 중이에요. 특히 MZ세대에게 인기예요!

These days, this coat is making a stylish comeback with its cozy and cute retro vibe. It’s especially popular among the MZ generation (Millennials and Gen Z)!

👗 꾸안꾸 | "Effortless chic" 꾸안꾸는 “꾸민 듯 안 꾸민 듯”의 줄임말이에요. 겉으로 보기에는 자연스러워 보이지만, 사실은 정성 들여 스타일링한 모습이에요. “Kku-an-kku” is short for “styled-but-natural.” It refers to looking effortlessly casual, but actually being carefully styled. 예를 들어보면(For examples),  후드티에 청바지 입은 것 같지만, 신발과 가방, 액세서리까지 완벽하게 매치한 룩이나 공항에서 연예인들이 입는 편안한 듯 고급스러운 옷차림도 꾸안꾸 스타일이에요. It looks like just a hoodie and jeans, but the shoes, bag, and accessories are perfectly matched. And Celebrity airport fashion — comfortable yet luxurious — is a great example of this “kku-an-kku” style.
