한국의 전통 간식 중 하나인 약과(약과)는 요즘 MZ세대 사이에서 다시 인기를 얻고 있어요.

Yakgwa is one of Korea’s most iconic traditional desserts, and lately, it’s making a huge comeback—especially among younger generations.

🍪 약과는 어떤 음식이에요? | What is Yakgwa?

약과는 밀가루 반죽에 꿀, 참기름, 생강즙을 넣고 기름에 튀긴 전통 간식이에요. 달콤하고 부드러운 맛이 나고, 쫀득한 식감도 있어서 많은 사람들이 좋아해요.

Yakgwa is a traditional Korean honey pastry made by mixing flour with honey, sesame oil, and ginger juice, then deep-frying it. It has a soft and chewy texture, with a sweet and warm flavor that’s comforting and nostalgic.

예전에는 약과를 주로 명절(설날, 추석)이나 제사 때만 먹었어요. 하지만 요즘은 편의점, 카페, 온라인 쇼핑몰에서도 쉽게 살 수 있어요!

In the past, yakgwa was only served on special occasions like traditional holidays and  Ancestral rituals. But now, you can easily find yakgwa in convenience stores,  modern cafés and even online shops!

🧁 요즘 약과가 다시 인기예요! | Yakgwa is Trendy Again

최근에는 MZ세대(Millennials + Gen Z)가 약과에 관심을 보이고 있어요.

In recent years, yakgwa has become popular among young Koreans—especially the MZ generation.

왜 그럴까요? Why?

👉 요즘 약과가 다시 사랑받는 이유는 새로운 맛과 젊은 세대 사이에서 퍼지는 레트로(복고) 트렌드 때문이에요. 한국 사람들은 전통 간식의 매력을 새롭게 발견하면서, 추억의 감성과 현대적인 취향을 자연스럽게 섞고 있어요. 🍯

These days, yakgwa is loved again because of its creative new flavors and the growing retro trend among young people. Koreans are rediscovering the charm of traditional treats, blending nostalgia with modern taste. 

요즘은 초코 약과, 녹차 약과, 크림치즈 약과 등등 정말 다양한 맛과 모양으로 나오고 있어요. 

These days, you’ll find chocolate yakgwa, matcha yakgwa, cream cheese yagwa and etc with its creative flavors and various packaging. 

💬 ‘할매니얼’이 뭐예요? | What is “Halmaenial”?

한국에는 요즘 새로운 신조어가 있어요, 할매니얼!

Here comes a new Korean slang word,  Halmaenial!

‘할매’(할머니) + ‘밀레니얼’을 합쳐 만든 단어예요.

It’s a combination of:

• 할매 (Halmae) = grandma

• 밀레니얼 (Millennial) = generation born around 1980–2000

할매니얼은 젊은 세대가 전통 간식, 빈티지 패션, 고전 감성을 즐기는 트렌드를 말해요.

Halmaenial describes young people who enjoy things that grandmas love—like traditional snacks, vintage fashion, old-style cafés and dishes

예를 들어,

For example: "제 취향은 할매니얼이에요. (My taste is halmaenial.)

이건 단순한 유행이 아니라, 전통과 정서를 즐기는 방식이에요. 💛

It’s not just a trend—it’s a celebration of heritage and comfort.

디저트에서 시작된 이 흐름은 이제 패션, 인테리어, 라이프스타일 전반으로 확장되고 있어요. 예컨대, 할매니얼 패션의 대표 주자는 바로 그래니룩(Granny Look)이에요.
The halmaenial trend, which started with desserts, is now spreading across fashion, interior design, and everyday lifestyle. For example, the most iconic halmaenial fashion trend is the “Granny Look.”

플라워 프린트 원피스, 레이스 달린 블라우스, 긴 스커트와 로퍼, 브라운, 머스터드, 톤다운된 핑크 같은 빈티지 색감 등 이런 요소들이 요즘 MZ세대에게 힙하고 독특한 스타일로 주목받고 있어요.

Floral print dresses, lace-trimmed blouses, long skirts paired with loafers, and vintage-inspired colors like brown, mustard, and muted pinks — these elements are now seen as trendy and unique styles among Korea’s MZ generation.

뷰티 트렌드에서도 진한 레드 립스틱이나 컬이 들어간 단발 헤어스타일처럼 예전 할머니들이 즐기던 스타일이 다시 유행하고 있어요.
Even in beauty, things like bold red lipstick and short curly hairstyles—once loved by grandmas—are making a comeback.

카페나 인테리어 스타일도 달라졌어요. 요즘은 옛날 다방 느낌의 카페, 양은잔에 나오는 커피, 종이 레이스 깔린 접시, 레트로 식기와 자개장 스타일의 테이블 같은 복고풍 공간이 큰 인기를 끌고 있죠. 

Retro-style cafés with aluminum cups, lace doilies, and antique furniture are especially trendy.

디저트 세계에서도 ‘할매 감성’이 물씬 풍겨요. 인절미 티라미수, 쑥크림 라떼, 흑임자 케이크, 약과 치즈 타르트 같은 전통 재료를 활용한 디저트가 등장하고 있어요.

Desserts using Korean ingredients like mugwort, injeolmi, black sesame, and yakgwa are becoming bestsellers at trendy cafés.

이처럼 옛것을 새롭게 즐기는 문화— 바로 그 중심에는 ‘할매니얼’ 현상이 있어요.

In short, the heart of this “old-is-new” movement is the halmaenial wave.
