Today, I’ve got a big story from the Korean film world—along with something thought-provoking and meaningful to share.

It’s about Director Park Chan-wook’s recent award, and the powerful message he delivered in his acceptance speech.

1. 박찬욱 감독은 누구인가요?(Who is Director Park Chan-wook?)

혹시 <올드보이>, <아가씨>, <헤어질 결심> 같은 영화를 들어본 적 있나요?

이 작품들은 모두 박찬욱 감독님이 만든 영화예요.

독특한 연출, 깊이 있는 이야기로 유명하죠.  박 감독님은 한국을 대표하는 영화감독이에요. 전 세계 영화 팬들의 사랑도 많이 받고 있어요.

2. 어떤 상을 받았나요?(What award did he win?)

2025년 5월 5일, 박찬욱 감독님은 제61회 백상예술대상에서 영화 부문 각본상을 받았어요. 수상작은 넷플릭스 영화 <전,란>이었는데요. 이 영화의 각본을 박찬욱 감독님이 공동으로 썼다고 해요.

On May 5, 2025, Director Park won Best Screenplay at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards.
The winning film was the Netflix movie Jeon, Ran. He co-wrote the screenplay for this movie.

3. <전,란>은 어떤 영화인가요?(What is <Jeon, Ran> about?)

<전,란>이라는 제목은 ‘전쟁’과 ‘반란’을 합친 말이에요. 이 영화는 임진왜란이 끝난 후, 나라가 혼란스러웠던 시기를 배경으로 하고 있어요. 박찬욱 감독님은 이 영화를 만들면서, 지금 한국의 정치 상황과 닮은 점이 많아도 느꼈다고 해요.

The title Jeon, Ran is a combination of two Korean words: jeonjaeng (war) and banran (rebellion).

The film is set right after the Imjin War—a time when the country was in chaos.

Director Park said that while making the film, he felt it mirrored the current political situation in Korea in many ways.

4. 수상 소감 속 메시지(The Meaning Behind His Speech)

수상 소감에서 박찬욱 감독님은 이렇게 말했어요

 "못되고 못난 선조 같은 사람 말고, 국민을 무서워할 줄 아는 사람을 뽑아야 한다." 

여기서 '선조'는 조선 시대의 왕, 선조를 말해요. 영화 속에서 차승원 배우가 연기했죠. 위기 상황에서 책임을 회피했던 왕이에요. 

이 말의 뜻은, 국민을 무시하는 권려가가 아니라 국민을 존중하고 두려워할 줄 아는 지도자를 뽑아야 한다는 거예요. 특히 지금은 한국의 대통령 선거를 앞두고 있어서, 이 말이 국민들에게 큰 울림을 주었어요. 

박 감독님은 국민의 선택이 나라를 바꿀 수 있다고 믿고 있는 거예요. 

During his speech, Director Park said:

"We shouldn't choose someone like King Seonjo-cowardly and unworthy. We need a leader who truly fears and respects the people."

Here, “Seonjo” doesn’t just mean past rulers. It refers to King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty—portrayed in the film by actor Cha Seung-won. Seonjo was a king who avoided responsibility during a national crisis.

So what does Park's message mean?

We shouldn't elect leaders who ignore the people. We need someone who respects and listens to the people. Someone who fears them—not in a scared way, but with a deep sense of responsibility and respect.

Especially now, as Korea heads into a presidential election, his words resonated deeply with many.

Director Park believes that the power of the people can truly change the future of a nation.

5. 오늘의 한국어 표현 정리(Let's Learn Some Korean Words)

이제 오늘 나온 단어들을 하나씩 쉽고 정확하게 복습해 볼게요. 

Now, let’s go over a few important Korean expressions from today’s story.

첫 번째, ‘각본상’이에요. ‘각본’은 영화나 드라마 대본이에요. 그래서 각본상은 대본을 가장 잘 쓴 사람에게 주는 상이에요. 

🔹 각본상 [gak-ppon-sang]: 각본 means “screenplay.” So 각본상 is the award given to the best screenplay writer.

두 번째, ‘임진왜란’이에요. 1592년에 일본이 조선을 침략하면서 시작된 전쟁이에요. <전,란>은 이 전쟁 이후의 혼란을 배경으로 한 영화예요.

🔹 임진왜란 [im-jin-woe-ran]: This refers to the Imjin War, which began in 1592 when Japan invaded Korea (then called Joseon). Jeon, Ran is set in the chaotic time following this war.

세 번째 단어는 ‘혼란기’예요. ‘혼란’은 질서가 없는 상태예요. ‘기’는 시간, 즉 시기예요. 그래서 ‘혼란기’는 나라나 사회가 혼란스러운 시기를 말해요. 

🔹 혼란기 [hol-lan-gi]: 혼란 means “chaos,” and 기 means “period of time.” So 혼란기 refers to a time of social or political instability.

네 번째는 ‘수상 소감’이에요. ‘수상’은 상을 받는 것, '소감'은 느낌이나 생각이에요. 그래서 '수상 소감'은 상을 받은 후에 하는 말이에요.

🔹 수상 소감 [su-sang so-gam]: 수상 means “receiving an award,” and 소감 means “your thoughts or feelings.” So 수상 소감 is the speech you give after winning an award.

마지막 표현은 ‘국민을 무서워하다’예요. 여기서 무서워하다는 그냥 무섭다는 뜻이 아니에요. 존중하고 함부로 하지 않는 태도를 말해요. '국민을 무서워하는 지도자'는 국민을 소중하게 생각하는 사람이에요.

🔹 국민을 무서워하다 [gung-min-eul mu-seo-wo-ha-da]: Literally, it means “to fear the people,” but here, it means to respect the people deeply—to never take them lightly. A leader who “fears the people” is one who listens, respects, and values the citizens.
