Hello, this is Tina Teacher! π
On April 4, 2025, something very important happened in South Korea.Former President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached and removed from office.
This was a major event in the history of Korean democracy.
So today, I’ll explain in simple Korean why this happened, what events led to his impeachment, and what it means for Korean democracy.

President Yoon Suk-yeol was elected in March 2022 with promises of “fairness and common sense.”
However, during his time in office, several major incidents occurred.
These events showed that the government lacked the ability to respond properly to national emergencies and failed to protect public safety. Eventually, these failures led to his impeachment.

On Halloween night in Itaewon, Seoul, a large crowd gathered and a crush accident happened. 159 people died and over 330 were injured. Warnings about overcrowding were raised before the accident, but the government did not take action. Even though the police received many emergency calls (112), they did not respond effectively. After the accident, the government showed a passive attitude toward the victims and their families. This made the people very angry and disappointed.

Private Chae Soo-geun, a Korean marine, died while searching for missing people during heavy flooding. It was later revealed that the marine unit did not give him proper safety gear and forced him into a dangerous mission. The government did not punish the commanders properly, and one official even called it a “small accident,” causing public outrage. People felt the government did not value the lives of soldiers.

President Yoon suddenly declared martial law without any warning. This meant political activities, such as the National Assembly and local councils, were suspended. Many people saw this as a threat to democracy. The National Assembly passed an impeachment motion on December 14, and the Constitutional Court officially removed him from office on April 4, 2025. These actions showed that citizens were standing up against undemocratic decisions.

Korea has a long history of people fighting for democracy:
-
April 19 Revolution (1960): Citizens and students protested against election fraud and forced President Syngman Rhee to step down.
-
May 18 Gwangju Uprising (1980): Citizens protested against military rule. The military responded with violence, and many people died. This became a symbol of the democracy movement.
-
Impeachment of President Park Geun-hye (2017): A major corruption scandal involving her close friend led to mass candlelight protests. She was impeached, showing the power of the people.
President Yoon’s impeachment is another important step created by the people.
