Hello, this is Tina!
Today, I’m going to talk about Seollal, Korea’s traditional holiday. Seollal is a very important day in Korea, marking the start of the new year. On Seollal, families gather to share delicious food and wish each other happiness.
On the morning of Seollal, families hold a ritual called Charye. Charye is a traditional ceremony where people express gratitude to their ancestors and pray for blessings in the new year. After Charye, people visit their ancestors' graves. This is called Seongmyo.
On Seollal, people wear special clothes. This outfit is called Seolbim. Wearing Seolbim makes Seollal feel even more special.
Children bow to the elders. This bow is called Sebae. Elders give children words of blessing. These words of blessing are called Deokdam. Deokdam means saying good and kind words. After Sebae, children receive Sebae money. Sebae money is a special gift that children receive on Seollal.
The most important food on Seollal is Tteokguk (rice cake soup). Tteokguk is made with thinly sliced white rice cakes cooked in a clear broth. In Korea, people say that eating Tteokguk makes you one year older. So children often eat a lot of Tteokguk because they want to grow up quickly.
However, Seollal is not always a joyful day for everyone. There is an issue called "Holiday Stress." Holiday Stress refers to the stress and fatigue people experience during holidays. Traditionally, it has been a difficult time for women, who were expected to do most of the housework. Nowadays, families try to share the work, such as preparing food together. This helps make Seollal a more enjoyable holiday for everyone.
Seollal celebrations have changed over time. In the past, all family members would gather in their hometowns. But nowadays, many families go on trips during the Seollal holiday. Also, instead of making traditional food at home, many people now buy it from stores.
Seollal is a day to share love and warmth with family. By eating Tteokguk and performing Sebae, you can experience Korean traditions.
Does your country have a holiday similar to Seollal?
If so, please share it with me in the comments! Wishing you a Happy New Year! Thank you!
