Below is the English version of the content.
Hi everyone! It’s Tina Teacher.
Today, I want to talk about a popular Korean drama on Netflix called “νμΉ μμμλ€” ("When Life Gives You Tangerines"). This touching story begins on Jeju Island, a beautiful island in the south of Korea. It's a great show, and also a good learning resource for Korean learners!
Let’s take a closer look together.
The drama is about a girl named Oh Ae-soon, who loves literature, and a boy named Yang Gwan-sik, who has liked her for a long time. The story follows their lives through the four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—showing how people change over time. It feels like watching a beautiful poem.
The title is unique, isn’t it? “νμΉ μμμλ€” is a phrase in the Jeju dialect. It means “You’ve worked so hard” or “Thank you for your effort.” It’s a warm expression that gives comfort to people who lived through difficult times.
The English title is “When Life Gives You Tangerines.” Have you heard the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”?
It means we should stay positive even in hard times. “Tangerines” replace “lemons” here, because tangerines are Jeju’s most famous fruit. So, the title has a Jeju flavor!
Jeju Island is located in the south of Korea. It has beautiful nature and a unique culture.
The drama starts in the 1960s in Jeju and continues until 2025 in Seoul, showing how Korean society has changed over time. You can also hear the Jeju dialect often in the show, which makes it fun and interesting for Korean learners.
Let me introduce some famous places that appear in the drama:
• Seongsan Ilchulbong: A famous mountain in Jeju, known for its sunrise views. The scenery is amazing.
• Gimnyeong Beach: A white sandy beach with beautiful blue water. It appears in the early part of the drama.
• Canola Flower Fields: Representing spring in Jeju. These yellow flowers create a warm and lovely mood.
You’ll also see black basalt rocks, traditional Jeju houses, and local food in the drama—full of Jeju’s unique charm!
In Jeju, there are special women called “haenyeo.” They dive into the sea without oxygen tanks to gather seafood. They need strong bodies and brave hearts!
Haenyeo are not just workers—they protect Jeju’s traditional culture. They’re even recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage!
In the drama, Ae-soon’s mother is a haenyeo. Her life shows how strong and courageous Jeju women were at that time.
This drama is not just a love story. It also shows important events in Korean modern history.
One of them is the Jeju 4.3 Incident, which happened from 1948 to 1954.
At that time, there were protests and conflicts on Jeju Island. Many people died or suffered.
The drama doesn’t talk about this event directly, but it shows the pain and life of people from that time.
It also shows how Korean society has developed from the 1960s to today.
So, why do I recommend “When Life Gives You Tangerines”?
1. You can hear both the Jeju dialect and standard Korean.
2. You can learn about Korea’s history and social changes.
3. You can experience Jeju’s traditional culture and daily life.
So it’s a great way to learn not only Korean language, but also Korean culture and history!
Today, we talked about the Netflix drama “νμΉ μμμλ€.”
It shows Jeju’s beautiful scenery, touching stories, and Korean modern history.
I hope this drama helps you understand Korea more deeply.
Have a great day!
See you next time~ Bye!
