Hello! This is Tina. Today, I’m going to introduce the Korean movie Harbin. This is a must-watch, especially for those interested in Korean history. Not only in Korea, but this movie has also been attracting a lot of attention from other countries.
Harbin tells the story of Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun and his passionate struggle for independence. It is based on historical facts while blending emotion and action, making it an engaging and thrilling watch.
The movie is set in the early 20th century when Korea’s independence movement was actively taking place. At that time, Harbin was a key city in Northeast Asia, where Russia, Japan, and China were competing for power. It also served as a crucial hub for Korean independence activists.
On October 26, 1909, in this very place, Ahn Jung-geun assassinated Ito Hirobumi for the independence of his homeland. His actions became a significant signal for peace in all of East Asia, and they remain one of the most important events in Korean history.
The movie portrays the process of Ahn Jung-geun’s assassination of Ito Hirobumi.
One goal toward Harbin: "Eliminate the old wolf!"
This story is not just about an incident; it delves into Ahn Jung-geun’s inner conflict and his courageous decision. It goes beyond historical facts to convey a narrative about the peace and freedom he longed for.
Who is Ahn Jung-geun?
Ahn Jung-geun is not just a historical figure; he is a symbol of Korea’s independence movement.
Born in 1879, he was a devoted Catholic who strongly believed in peace and justice.
He risked his life to carry out his mission in Harbin, hoping to reveal the reality of Japan’s rule over Korea to the world. He was not merely an independence fighter; he also authored a book called "On Peace in East Asia", emphasizing peace among Korea, China, and Japan. Even before his execution, he remained steadfast in his belief that he had done the right thing. His courage continues to inspire people to this day.
Harbin Features an All-Star Cast
Some of Korea’s top actors have come together for Harbin:
- Hyun Bin, known for Crash Landing on You and Confidential Assignment, plays Ahn Jung-geun, delivering a powerful performance that brings the independence fighter to life.
- Lee Dong-wook, famous for Goblin, plays Lee Chang-seop, Ahn’s comrade.
- Jeon Yeo-been, a rising star, plays a key figure who helps Ahn Jung-geun in his mission.
- Park Jung-min and Jo Woo-jin, both highly versatile actors, add depth to the film with their dynamic performances.
Their passionate acting, combined with outstanding cinematography, vividly recreates this historical era.
Why You Must Watch Harbin
First, this movie vividly depicts Korea’s independence movement and the heroic deeds of Ahn Jung-geun. But it is more than just a history film—it is filled with intense action and deeply moving moments.
Harbin has been hailed as a visual masterpiece. To authentically capture the landscapes where independence fighters operated, the film was shot across three countries: Mongolia, Latvia, and South Korea. It was filmed using the ARRI ALEXA 65, earning high praise for its exceptional cinematography. The film was even officially invited to the Gala Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival, receiving a warm reception.
Whether you love history, Korean cinema, or just a compelling story, Harbin is a film you won’t want to miss. Experience a piece of history on the big screen!
Useful Vocabulary
Let’s go over some useful words related to this movie.
-
Japanese Colonial Period (Ilje Gangjeomgi [μΌμ©¨κ°Λμ κΈ°]) – The period when Korea was under Japanese rule, lasting from 1910 to 1945. The word "κ°μ " means "occupation by force."
-
Independence Movement (Dongnib Undong [λλλΆλ]) – The efforts made to regain the country’s independence. People wrote, protested, and fought for freedom.
-
Independence Activist (Dongnib Undongga [λλλΆλκ°]) – Someone who participated in the independence movement. These individuals were brave enough to sacrifice their lives for the country. Ahn Jung-geun himself was one.
-
"Ui-sa" (μμ¬) – This term refers not to a doctor but to someone who used armed resistance for the country’s independence. They engaged in violent struggles such as bombings, shootings, and assassinations. Ahn Jung-geun assassinated Ito Hirobumi in Harbin in 1909 as an act of resistance against Japan’s invasion.
His act was not a mere outburst of personal anger—it was for the sake of his country.
On the other hand, those who resisted peacefully and without weapons are called "Yeol-sa" (μ΄μ¬).
- "Yeol-sa" (μ΄μ¬) – Those who resisted using peaceful methods such as protests, speeches, and declarations. One well-known figure is Yoo Gwan-sun, who shouted for independence during the March 1st Movement in 1919. Despite being imprisoned and tortured, she never lost faith in Korea’s independence.
