Today, I want to share an exciting and proud story with you, especially for those learning Korean. It’s about Korean words that have been included in the Oxford English Dictionary! Recently, new words have been added, and I’m so excited to introduce them to you.

1. 한국어 단어, 처음 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 실린 이야기

사실 한국어가 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 처음 실린 건 꽤 오래된 일이에요.

1970년대에 김치(Kimchi),막걸리(Makgeolli) 같은 한국의 대표적인 음식 단어들이 처음 등재되기 시작했죠. 당시에는 한국 음식에 대한 관심이 조금씩 생겨나던 시기였어요. 그런데 최근 몇 년 사이, K-pop, K-drama, 한류(Hallyu) 덕분에 한국 문화가 세계적으로 큰 사랑을 받으면서 더 많은 한국어 단어들이 사전에 올라가게 되었답니다.

1. The First Korean Words in the Oxford English Dictionary

Did you know that Korean words were first included in the Oxford English Dictionary quite a long time ago?

In the 1970s, representative Korean food terms like Kimchi and Makgeolli began to make their way into the dictionary. Back then, global interest in Korean cuisine was just starting to grow. In recent years, however, thanks to the worldwide popularity of K-pop, K-drama, and Hallyu (the Korean Wave), more and more Korean words have been added to the dictionary. Isn't that amazing?

2. 이번에 새롭게 등재된 한국어 단어들

이번에는 특히 한국의 일상과 문화를 담은 단어들이 새롭게 추가되었어요. 어떤 단어들이 있는지 하나씩 살펴볼까요?

• 달고나 (Dalgona): 한국의 전통적인 설탕 간식이에요. 설탕을 녹여 만든 달콤한 과자로, 모양을 찍어서 즐기기도 하죠. 드라마 <오징어 게임>에서 등장하면서 전 세계적으로 큰 인기를 얻었어요. 해외에서도 달고나를 따라 만들어보는 챌린지가 유행했답니다.

• 막내 (Maknae): 팀이나 가족에서 가장 어린 사람을 뜻하는 단어예요. 특히 K-pop 팬들 사이에서 막내 멤버를 부를 때 자주 사용되면서 유명해졌어요. “우리 팀의 막내는 정말 귀여워요!” 같은 문장에서 볼 수 있답니다.

• 노래방 (Noraebang): 친구들과 함께 노래를 부르며 즐길 수 있는 장소를 말해요. K-pop 팬들 사이에서 “노래방에서 BTS 노래 부르기” 같은 문화가 유명해지면서 관심을 끌게 되었어요.

• 찌개 (Jjigae): 한국의 따뜻한 국물 요리 중 하나로, 된장찌개, 김치찌개처럼 종류도 다양해요. 고기, 채소, 두부 등을 넣어 끓인 국물 요리는 한국인들의 일상에서 빠질 수 없는 음식이죠. 외국인들도 찌개의 깊은 맛에 반한다는 이야기를 자주 들어요.

• 떡볶이 (Tteokbokki): 쫀득한 떡에 매콤달콤한 소스를 더한 대표적인 한국 스트리트푸드예요. 한국 학생들에게는 소울푸드 같은 음식으로, 길거리 음식 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 메뉴랍니다.

• 판소리 (Pansori): 한국의 전통 음악으로, 이야기를 노래와 연기로 표현하는 예술이에요. 마치 솔로 오페라 같은 독특한 매력을 가진 판소리는 한국의 전통을 담고 있어요.

2. The Newly Added Korean Words

This time, words reflecting Korea’s everyday life and culture have been newly added. Let’s take a closer look at them!

• Dalgona: A traditional Korean sugar candy made by melting sugar and shaping it into fun designs. It became a global sensation after appearing in the drama Squid Game. People worldwide even started a “Dalgona Challenge” to recreate it.

• Maknae: This term refers to the youngest person in a group, whether it’s a family or a team. It became widely recognized among K-pop fans, who often refer to the youngest members of their favorite groups as the “maknae.” 

• Noraebang: A place where you can sing songs and have fun with friends—essentially a karaoke room. Among K-pop fans, singing BTS songs at noraebangs has become a popular activity! 

• Jjigae: A warm Korean stew made with ingredients like meat, vegetables, tofu, and more. Popular varieties include doenjang jjigae and kimchi jjigae. It’s a staple in Korean households, and many foreigners fall in love with its rich and hearty flavors. 

• Tteokbokki: A chewy rice cake dish covered in a sweet and spicy sauce. It’s one of Korea’s most famous street foods and a soul food for many Korean students. 

• Pansori: A traditional Korean musical art form that combines storytelling with singing and acting. It has a unique charm, often likened to a solo opera, and beautifully embodies Korea's cultural heritage.

3. 왜 이 단어들이 중요한가요?

이 단어들은 단순히 사전에 실린 단어 이상이에요.

• 세계와 소통하는 한국어: 한국의 문화와 일상을 담은 단어들이 전 세계 사람들과 소통하는 다리가 되고 있어요.

• 한국어 배우기 더 쉽고 친근하게: 한국어를 처음 접하는 사람들에게도 이 단어들은 한국 문화를 배우고 이해하는 첫걸음이 될 수 있답니다.

• 세계 언어로 자리 잡아가는 한국어: 이제 한국어는 단순히 한국에서만 쓰이는 언어가 아니라, 세계인들이 관심을 가지는 언어로 성장하고 있어요!

3. Why Are These Words Important?

These words represent much more than just dictionary entries.

• Korean Connecting with the World: These words act as bridges, helping people around the globe connect with Korean culture and daily life.

• Making Korean Easier to Learn: For those just starting to learn Korean, these words are an approachable way to explore and understand Korean culture.

• Korean Becoming a Global Language: Korean is no longer just a language used in Korea—it’s becoming a language that people all over the world are interested in and want to learn!

<알아두면 쓸모 있는 단어 공부> 

• 등재[등재]

 "등재"는 어떤 내용을 공식적으로 기록하거나 목록에 올린다는 뜻이에요. 쉽게 말하면, 중요한 곳에 이름을 올리는 것을 말해요. 

어디에 많이 쓰일까요? 

등재라는 단어는 주로 "문화 유산 등재"나 "사전에 등재"처럼 기록물이나 중요한 목록에 올라갈 때 많이 써요. 

예를 들어:  

"세계 문화 유산으로 등재 신청을 하다." 

"새로운 단어가 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 등재되었어요." 

등재는 동사로도 쓰여요. 

- 등재되다: 이름이나 내용이 공식적으로 기록되다. 

- 등재하다: 내가 직접 이름이나 내용을 올리다. 

예를 들면, 

 "한국의 전통 음식이 유네스코에 등재되었어요." 

"주소를 가족 명부에 등재했어요."

<Useful Words to Know: Deung-jae>

What does "Deung-jae" mean?

"Deung-jae" means to officially record or list something in a register or list. Simply put, it refers to adding something important to an official record.

Where is it commonly used?

The word "Deung-jae" is often used in contexts like "registering cultural heritage" or "adding a word to the dictionary."

Examples:

"Apply for registration as a World Cultural Heritage site."

"A new word has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary."

"Deung-jae" can also be used as a verb:

- Deung-jae-doe-da: When a name or content is officially recorded.

- Deung-jae-ha-da: When you actively register or record something yourself.

Examples:

"Traditional Korean food has been registered as UNESCO cultural heritage." 

"I registered the address in the family record."
